If you took a shot every time I say 'Rockaway' in this post, you'd suffer from alcohol poisoning.
Living in Queens, I'm about a 20 minute drive from the beach- Rockaway beach that is. When I was a little girl, me, my mother, and my brothers would go at least once a week with my closest friend Victoria, her mother and her brother. We'd always have such a great time- burying one another in the sand, digging massive holes, or pretending to "surf" the waves with our cheap boogie boards. Spending all day at the beach was always my favorite pastime. In some way it still is.
As I've gotten older, Victoria and I have tried to keep up that tradition of visiting the beach during our summers. We're both in our twenties now (which is scary- yet fun). Sometimes on the weekends when I'm not working, my parents and I will wake up early and make our way over to ensure we get a spot.
However, something new to our tradition is visiting Tacoway Beach at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. I discovered this place before it moved into the Rockaway Beach Surf Club space, when it was still a little hut on Rockaway Beach blvd and was previously known as Rockaway Taco. but along with the expansion of their fanbase, they needed to expand their space, hence their move to Rockaway Beach Surf Club.
I can't not go all out when I visit Tacoway Beach. Their fish tacos with guac are my favorite, and are easily my favorite tacos in NYC. Their juices are pretty tasty too, and I enjoy snacking on their cukes- which is mango and cucumber topped with Tajin; all of which are refreshing on a nice sunny summer day.
The line can get pretty intense, especially on weekends during prime meal hours. But, it is DEFINITELY worth it. So, the next time you find yourself in Rockaway, give Tacoway Beach a try! And remember to take out cash because this place is cash only.
